Hailed by The Guardian, Rob Da Bank and more, Budapest's raw and poetic The Unbending Trees visit London in December to headline the latest evening from Ben Watt's Strange Feeling Records (the alt-pop sister to his more famous electronic imprint, Buzzin' Fly.) The Unbending Trees deliver dark cathartic ballads shot through with a gothic luminosity and European intensity that have been compared to Leonard Cohen, Red House Painters and Jacques Brel. Kristof, the lead singer is an ex-friar, thrown out of a monastery at 18. Havasi, the pianist, is a revered Hungarian classical performer. Tracey Thorn was so struck by them when they played at the Betsey Trotwood last year that she has sung a duet on the album. Since their UK acceptance, MTV Hungary have turned them into cult heroes in their home country. With their live shows and debut EP last September they caught the ear of people like Jim Gellatly at XFM, Rob Da Bank at Radio 1, The Observer's Molloy Woodcraft and tipsheets like The Fly and Artrocker. With their recently released debut album 'Chemically Happy Is The New Sad' they have found support from The Guardian, Pete Paphides at The Times, Kruger and The Independent On Sunday, while delivering impressive radio sessions for BBC Radio 1's Rob Da Bank and 6Music's Gideon Coe. Warming up will be Norfolk's The Lost Levels. Spotted by Strange Feeling on the Orange Unlit Tour, they have supported artists such as The Delays, Jim Noir and Gravenhurst, and have released a low-key debut EP, but it is with their new material that they have really caught the ear - rich psychelic, pastoral soul that recalls Syd Barrett or The Bees.
